On May 11, 2021 two separate conventions posted updates about their 2021 conventions.
Let’s start with Megaplex.
The update to the convention site’s FAQ.
Because of an Executive Order, the convention cannot ask for proof of vaccination. Furthermore, the proof available is ineffectual anyways.
I actually think that Executive Orders like this one are taking a necessary stance in favor of human rights. The potential benefits of a fully vaccinated population are, to be fair, quite apparent. But believing we have the right to inject others with substances against their will (or punish them if they refuse) is…not something that sits right with me, even if I think anti-vaxxers are a little nuts.
I think it’s really cringe if people avoid the older vaccines that have been shown to work well for several decades now. I’d consider it child abuse to not vaccinate your kids against age-old things like measles for example. I also understand the current wave of apprehension, and I think it’s extremely disingenuous to lump it in with the “anti-vaxxer” crowd. A lot of people that have no issues with taking vaccines in general want to see a longer testing period. This isn’t being anti-vaccine.
With the Covid vaccines you’re dealing with new technology that may or may not have long-term side effects. It’s not something people should be pressured into, at least not until it has a track record of not causing serious side effects for several years.
That diatribe aside, let’s talk about the cancellation of Anthrohio.
The official message about the cancellation. Lol @ the typo.
Some furries are on board with this.
Not everyone is on board with leaving the Corona era behind us, and I think it’s normal to still be scared at this point. I would personally go ahead with conventions if it were me, but I am not a con chair. It’s not like people are being forced to go. Then again, it could easily be a budget thing too.
